Council

The CLPNA Council of Governors is the governing body of the College consisting of Licensed Practical Nurses elected from each of the seven CLPNA Districts, plus the President. In addition, the Health Professions Act requires the provincial government appoint three public representatives to sit on this Council and represent the views of the people of Alberta.

If you would like to contact the Council Member for the district you reside in, contact the CLPNA office and a message will be forwarded to the appropriate member.

Council Member Duties

The Council is responsible for the overall general direction of the College. In particular, the Council is responsible for ensuring the College operates on a sound financial basis. The Council operates on a broad policy and overall planning level, determining the outcomes or “ends.” The Council does not manage day to day operations, or the “means” of achieving outcomes. Formally, the Council deals with College business through the Executive Director.

The following activities are the responsibility of the Council:

  • Set/amend Bylaws, Regulations, Standards of Practice, and Code of Ethics
  • Establish/amend Council policies
  • Establish/review/revise strategic direction of the College including Mission, Vision, Values, Mandate and expected Outcomes
  • Approve practical nurse education programs
  • Review/approve annual financial statements
  • Select, direct, assess, coach and discipline the Executive Director
  • Establish/support Council Committees
  • Conduct periodic review of Council performance
  • Hear appeals on matters of conduct or registration

The terms of office of each member of Council elected hereafter shall be for two (2) years commencing on September 1st of the year of his/her election and may be renewed once. The term of office of each member of Council now in office shall continue until and expire upon the 31st day of August in the second year following the year of his/her election.

Time Commitment

Each year, Councillors are required to attend four meetings (each meeting is scheduled for one to two days), including the annual Spring Conference in April, for a total of 10 days. In addition time is required for meeting preparation and traveling.

Rewards

Former CLPNA President Ruth Wold has said that what she found rewarding about her role on Council is that it enables her the ability to impact change for her profession. It allows her the ability to see the bigger picture of nursing provincially and nationally and what is happening in nursing and healthcare across Alberta.
