Working or accepting employment as a LPN without having a valid Practice Permit from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses is not permitted and a contravention of the Health Professions Act of Alberta.
To become registered in Alberta as a Licensed Practical Nurse, please contact the following individuals:
If you graduated from a health care program as a Canadian Practical Nurse or as an American Practical/Vocational Nurse AND have NEVER been licensed in Alberta before, you may request an "Out of Province Application" from Giane in the Registration Department at gescuadro@clpna.com. Please include the answers to the following questions:
- Are you currently licensed as an LPN? If so, where?
- Where did you take your nursing education?
- Have you ever been licensed in Alberta before?
*Please note that all eligible USA applicants will be required to write the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Exam (CPNRE).
If you are licensed in the USA as an LPN but your program was taken in another country other than Canada or the USA, you must have practiced a minimum of 500 hours as an LPN in an official USA facility to be eligible to apply; otherwise you are considered an internationally educated nurse. Please go to the Internationally Educated Nurses webpage.
If you were previously licensed as an LPN in Alberta, please go to the Previously Licensed in Alberta webpage.
The application process may take several weeks to months depending on how quickly the documentation is received and approved. This time MUST be taken into consideration prior to accepting employment as an LPN in Alberta. If you have applied and have not heard from the CLPNA, contact the Registration Department to check the status of your application.
