The LPN Competency Profile outlines the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes required by an LPN in Alberta as required by the Health Professions Act LPN Regulation 2003 and the CLPNA Standards of Practice. The Profile defines the LPN Scope of Practice and is a valuable tool to assist managers and educators in advancing job descriptions and nursing policies, and sets the basis for the LPN Continuing Competency Program.

The Profile defines basic and advanced competencies of the profession. The basic competencies act as a curriculum guide for all practical nurse programs in Alberta and define the depth and breadth of knowledge and skills for entry-level practitioners. The advanced and specialty competencies define areas of advancement that may be attained by LPNs through on the job training and certification, post-basic certifications, and specialty education.

The LPN Competency Profile is a “living document”; it evolves and changes as nursing education, practice, and the LPN roles grows throughout the province.

The second edition of the Competency Profile for LPNs was updated using the new terminology of the Health Professions Act, the new LPN Standards of Practice, restricted activity authorization information, and many changes in practice since the original printing in 1998. The competencies with the most changes are E-Nursing Practice, K-Maternal/Newborn Care, M-Mental Health, N-Emergency, R-Community Health, U-Medication Administration, V-Infusion Therapy, W-Professionalism, and X-Leadership.
