The Continuing Competence Program (CCP)

The Continuing Competence Program (CCP) is a formal system of assessing, monitoring, implementing, and reporting on the knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments of a professional health care provider. The CCP promotes ongoing safe, competent, life-long practice, and offers nurses opportunities to pursue and achieve professional growth throughout their careers.
The Alberta Health Professions Act (2000) requires that all regulated health professions have a responsible, accountable and formal means of assessing and reporting on the continuing competence of their members. All health professions are required to establish a Continuing Competence Program.

The CCP consists of the Competency Profile, Self Assessment Guidelines, Self-Assessment Tool, Learning Plan and Record of Professional Activities. Together these form the framework for the LPN to assess and formulate a professional learning plan.

The Competency Profile is a detailed and specific description of the knowledge and skills of an entry-level Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as well as an advanced–level practitioner. The Competency Profile is a necessary tool used to develop learning objectives by identifying areas in which further understanding or comprehension of a particular skill or area of practice, would enhance the LPN’s nursing role.
