Immunization (or the administration of any vaccine) is a restricted activity for LPNs in Alberta that requires completion of an Immunization course and authorization by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) to be performed.
LPNs successfully completing an Immunization course from Bow Valley College, Advancing Practice or Health Canada (for Health Canada employees only) are eligible to receive authorization to administer any vaccine or immunizing agent.
This authorization then allows LPNs to vaccinate individuals ages 5 and older, with an authorized practitioner available for consultation and employer protocols in place.
LPNs completing one of these programs must ensure the CLPNA is notified in order to have the authorization noted on their practice permit. The LPN must email, fax or mail a copy of their certificate of completion to the CLPNA directly. After authorization, the Immunization Specialty will appear on an LPN’s Practice Permit.
The Immunization specialization is one of four restricted activities regulated by the Health Professions Act and the CLPNA. The others are Advanced Orthopedics, Operating Room, and Renal Dialysis.
