The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) has partnered with expert Kath Murray to deliver a series of free educational webinars on palliative care – the art and science of death and dying.

All webinars are FREE! No registration fee to attend. This webinar series is intended to be an education tool that will inspire you to delve into this topic with new interest.

With an aging population and changes in the way people die, all nurses may expect to care for a dying person, whether through their job or through their community of friends and family. Integrating a palliative approach early in the disease process for people with any life-limiting illnesses, across all care settings, can help to improve quality of living, dying and bereavement.

In this webinar, we will identify the common issues experienced by the person and their family, and essential tools to provide best care and professional resources for every nurse.

Participants will:

  1. Define a palliative approach and discuss the challenges to integrating a palliative approach.
  2. Identify four essential tools to enhance care and communication.
  3. Identify three resources to support the integration of palliative care in practice.

Difficulty breathing is one of the most feared symptoms of dying. In this session, we will discuss strategies for assessing, preventing and responding to dyspnea.

Participants will:

  1. Discuss the experience of dyspnea.
  2. Identify tools to assess dyspnea.
  3. Identify strategies to prevent dyspnea from occurring and/or escalating.
  4. Identify pharmacological and nonpharmacological ways to support individuals who experience dyspnea.
