Understanding the Difference: Regulator & Union

To support Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) understanding about the difference between the functions of regulators and the role of unions, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) developed an illustrative document, Understanding the Difference: Regulator and Union.

Regulatory colleges are given the authority to govern healthcare professions under the Health Professions Act (HPA). To ensure public safety the HPA sets requirements that must be followed including a clear separation between the responsibility of the profession’s regulatory functions and those related to salary negotiations, conditions of work or labour relations of members of the profession.
