(UPDATED March 26, 2021 with updated policy name)
In preparation for Registration Renewal for 2021, a reminder to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta’s members on how to ensure they meet the requirements on being Actively Engaged in Practice.
By 2022, all Licensed Practical Nurses will be required to have provided nursing services for a minimum of 1000 hours within the previous four-year period (2018 – 2021) to be eligible for registration.
Nursing services is defined in the policy as “direct nursing practice and/or roles that are linked to administration, management, education, and research.”
Implementation of the 1000 hours minimum is the final stage in a three-year transition process for the Continuing Competence Program. Practice hours are requested annually on the CLPNA’s Registration Renewal application. The process to renew for 2021 begins in October 2020.
This requirement does not apply to recent graduates or other LPNs who have been registered for fewer than four years by 2022.
LPNs are encouraged to check their profile on myCLPNA.com to see their currently reported hours.
The Policy: Actively Engaged Requirements for Registration and the Continuing Competence Program is part of the CLPNA’s regulatory mandate to protect the public by ensuring LPNs are competent to practice under the Health Professions Act (HPA) and the Licensed Practical Nurses Profession Regulation.
