Applicants Now Have More Options to Demonstrate English Language Proficiency

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses (CLPNA) is pleased to announce an update to its English Language Proficiency Policy that will support more nurses in becoming registered as Alberta LPNs.
The CLPNA has added more options for applicants to provide proof of English language proficiency. Effective March 16, 2023, applicants can demonstrate proficiency through completion of secondary school or nursing education in English. The CLPNA will also accept employer verification that the applicant has been providing health services primarily in English. These options are in addition to those already available.
As workforce shortages continue to impact Alberta’s healthcare system, the CLPNA is continually evaluating its process and implementing policy changes that will streamline the process for applicants and recognize previous experiences. These newest changes will help a greater number of applicants register and begin working as Alberta LPNs faster. By maintaining a robust and effective assessment process, the CLPNA continues to protect public safety while supporting the entrance of qualified nurses to practice in Alberta.
