On February 2, 2026, Health Care Aide (HCA) regulation comes into effect. All HCAs enrolled and active on the HCA Directory at that time will be transitioned to the regulated register of the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). This includes HCAs who are “In-Progress” on the Directory.
Beginning February 2, 2026, anyone working as an HCA in Alberta must be registered and hold a valid practice permit with the CLHA.
Those who are not on the CLHA register after this date, or who are new graduates or applicants from another province, will need to apply for registration and meet the requirements outlined in the Policy: Declarations and Registration Requirements.
There are a number of requirements that you should be aware of. Learn more about each one by selecting from the menu below.
The CLHA is committed to having transparent, objective, impartial, and procedurally fair registration practices.
Alberta HCAs are required to carry malpractice liability insurance.
There are fees associated with applying for and maintaining a practice permit with the CLHA.
All applicants must be able to provide professional services in English.
Applicants and registrants can expect these standards when interacting with the Registration Department at the CLHA.
The Registration Service Standards policy outlines registration service standards at the CLHA.
