HCAs in Alberta: Statistics from the 2024 CLPNA Annual Report

The Annual Report of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) includes statistics gathered from the Alberta Health Care Aide (HCA) Directory. Every year, we share these statistics with stakeholders, including HCAs. Some highlights are listed below.

  • The number of HCAs in Alberta rose 6.1% in 2024. There are 36,655 HCAs on the Directory as of December 31, 2024.
  • A total of 2,457 HCAs were assessed as substantially equivalent in 2024. This includes graduates of HCA programs outside of Alberta; internationally educated providers; and individuals with education as personal support workers, continuing care assistants, nurses, or other professions considered to provide direct client care.
    • 873 approved applications came from Canada, a 16.8% increase.
    • 649 approved applications came from the Philippines, a 65.5% increase.
    • 572 approved applications came from India, a 153% increase.
  • Most (58.2%) of HCAs work in long term care, with 16.2% working in hospitals and 11.7% working for home care agencies.
  • The average age of Alberta HCAs is 45.5.
  • Most HCAs work in either Calgary (34.8%) or Edmonton (34.1%).
  • 40.3% of HCAs work full time, with 38.5% working part time and 21.2% working on a casual basis.
