Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Cognitive Impairment
Throughout 2025, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will release modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and the integration of trends and issues related to the care of the older adult.
New module: Cognitive Impairment
Coming up next: Continence and Mobility
Cognitive impairment describes a range of disturbances of cognitive functioning including memory, orientation, attention, and concentration. This module will support Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in understanding the types and impacts of cognitive impairment and how cognitive impairment can contribute to behavioural symptoms such as wandering, verbal and physical aggression, and socially inappropriate or responsive behaviors.
What Will LPNs Learn in This Module?
This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.
LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.
- Understand the difference between depression, dementia, and delirium.
- Identify how to assess and manage the different types of cognitive impairment (dementia, depression, and delirium).
- Name the most commonly used assessments for cognitive impairment (dementia, depression, and delirium) and have a general understanding of how to use them.
- Describe the responsive behavior’s that may occur as part of cognitive impairment and non-pharmacological ways to address them.
