Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Leadership and Ageism
Throughout 2025, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will release modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and the integration of trends and issues related to the care of the older adult.
New module: Leadership and Ageism
Coming up next: Cognitive Impairment
This module will provide practical strategies to support Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in diminishing ageism in healthcare settings. LPNs can expect to learn about ageism’s prevalence, the types of ageism, and how nurses can unintentionally perpetuate ageism in their practice.
What Will LPNs Learn in This Module?
This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.
LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.
- Recognize the insidious nature of ageism in healthcare settings.
- Understand the leadership role that nurses can take to diminish ageism.
- Identify practical strategies to diminish ageism in client care.
