New Applicant Pathway Open August 5
The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) is pleased to announce that applicants from other Canadian jurisdictions will be able, effective August 5, 2025, to apply through the Interjurisdictional Nursing Licensure (INL) pathway to become registered to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Alberta.
Who Is the INL Applicant Pathway For?
The INL pathway is for LPN applicants who are currently registered in another Canadian jurisdiction and wish to remain registered in their home province while practicing as an Alberta LPN.
For those who successfully apply through this pathway, the CLPNA will act as a “host” jurisdiction, with the “home” jurisdiction being the primary province or territory in which the registrant resides for the purposes of taxes. LPNs on the INL register must remain in good standing with their home jurisdiction and participate in the home jurisdiction’s continuing competence program.
Why Should Someone Apply to Be an INL Registrant?
For INL applicants, education, exam, and practice will be evaluated as per Alberta’s Labour Mobility Act, which in many cases means the process will be completed quickly. Additionally, because INL registrants must remain registered with their host jurisdiction, they pay a reduced fee to register with the CLPNA. Professional conduct complaints will be resolved in the jurisdiction where the client is receiving care.
What Is the Process to Apply?
The full process to apply is described on the CLPNA’s website.
