New Module: Determining LPN Scope of Practice
Scope of practice is individual and different for each LPN. Several factors go into determining LPN scope of practice and it can change regularly in response to the needs of the healthcare system. An LPN’s scope of practice often expands as new skills are acquired and can change based on the practice setting and the LPN’s role.
To determine an individual LPN’s scope of practice, it is necessary to use critical thinking and consider the different aspects that make up scope of practice. This will help individual LPNs when determining their own scope of practice.
At the end of this learning module the learner will:
- Be aware of the regulatory documents that explain LPN practice.
- Understand where determining LPN scope of practice aligns with the Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada.
- Be able to define scope of practice.
- Understand the difference between regulatory, employer, and individual scope of practice.
- Understand how to evaluate whether an activity or area of practice is within scope of practice.
- Understand the Three-Factor Framework and how to use it to assist in determining whether an activity is appropriate for them to perform.
- Define nurse competence, client, and environmental factors.
- Understand what the LPN Practice Decision Making Tool is and how to use it.
