What Is a Code of Ethics?

LPNs use the Code of Ethics together with professional standards, employer policies, and regulatory and legislative requirements to guide their practice and behaviour.

The Code of Ethics articulates six fundamental principles, listed below, which govern LPN practice and which LPNs are accountable for upholding.

  1. LPNs promote optimal health and well-being.
  2. LPNs provide care that is physically, psychologically, and culturally safe.
  3. LPNs provide and advocate for client dignity, autonomy, and self-determination.
  4. LPNs develop therapeutic relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
  5. LPNs maintain personal well-being.
  6. LPNs contribute to a health practice environment.
