Virtual Simulation Brings Innovative Remedial Education for LPNs

A pilot project developed by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and NorQuest College will support Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in improving their clinical skills through virtual simulation training at the Olson Centre for Health Simulation.

This innovative project will see LPNs engaging in realistic scenarios to refine their clinical skills, working with state-of-the-art tools such as virtual reality systems and mannequins. The one-year pilot will focus on supporting LPNs by offering a hands-on learning opportunity following a complaint of unprofessional conduct. The virtual simulations will allow them to practice real life scenarios as well as reflect on clinical experiences to improve patient care.

If the pilot is a success, the CLPNA will explore expanding the project to post-secondaries in other areas of the province, opening up more opportunities for LPNs to improve their skills.

“This innovative program marks a transformation in how we address remedial education,” says CLPNA CEO Jeanne Weis. “By reinforcing critical thinking and clinical accuracy in a low-risk environment, we’re supporting the safe, competent care that Albertans expect. I want to thank NorQuest for partnering with us on this exciting new pilot.”

At the Olson Centre for Health Simulation, NorQuest College practical nursing students use cutting-edge health simulation technology and award-winning virtual reality experiences to learn and practice their skills in a safe environment.

“One of the principal tenets of healthcare is continuous learning and the ability to quickly adapt to changing situations,” explains Jennifer Mah, Dean of the Health Studies at NorQuest College.   “This pilot project will enable Alberta’s licensed practical nurses to receive accurate education and real-time feedback, allowing them to enhance their skills and confidence, and ultimately ensure a safe healthcare system for all Albertans.”

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta regulates the LPN profession in a manner that protects and serves the public. The CLPNA sets and monitors standards for LPN practice and competencies.
