Practice Corner:
Does the CLPNA Require CPR certification?

Registrants and other stakeholders can contact the Practice Department at the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) to receive clarification on Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) practice.

In Practice Corner, we’ll share some frequently asked questions and our answers.

Does the CLPNA require CPR certification?

No, the CLPNA does not require LPNs to hold CPR certification to obtain or renew registration. CPR training may be an employer requirement, or a condition of employment, in certain practice settings.

Employers work within a legislated framework to define the LPN role in their setting. This definition is made through employer requirements, guidelines, and job descriptions. The legislated framework includes the Health Professions Act, regulations, standards of practice, and the Code of Ethics.
