Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) have a professional and ethical responsibility to practice within the relevant laws governing the privacy and confidentiality of patient information. This means all LPNs have a duty to safeguard patients’ personal and health information as well as respect patients’ right to privacy. LPNs are ultimately responsible for determining and understanding which piece of privacy legislation helps fulfill this commitment.

This webinar will discuss the following Alberta privacy legislation:

• Health Information Act or HIA,
• Personal Information Protection Act or PIPA, and
• Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act or FOIP

Additionally, LPNs will learn how to identify when federal privacy legislation applies in place of provincial privacy legislation, including the

• Privacy Act, and
• Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act or PIPEDA.

This webinar can be used as part of continuing competence learning activities.
