3 Full-Day Seminars
Seminar 1 – Polypharmacy: The Pearls, the Perils, and the Pitfalls
The whole new world of Geriatric Pharmacology awaits you! It has been estimated that 28% of all hospitalizations in the elderly are due to adverse drug reactions. And, right along with that fact, it has been estimated that each older patient has 6.5 chronic conditions with an average of 3-5 drugs prescribed to treat each condition. YOU DO THE MATH.
Barb will discuss the normal physiologic changes of aging that play a major role in drug absorption, distribution, and excretion. You will learn the most common disastrous drug combinations and how to avoid them – and you will learn what drugs can be substituted, deleted, and/or added to avoid drug-related disasters. How can something as simple as ibuprofen throw an 80-year-old into renal failure? How can a single dose of cimetidine send a 90-year-old into a state of delirium?
Attend this seminar to hone your skills in providing safe pharmaceutical treatments for the multitude of clinical conditions encountered in your aging population.
Seminar 2 – The Neurology of Aging
Barb provides a comprehensive discussion of the most common Neurological conditions observed in the Geriatric population–physiology, pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment.
Barb will discuss the 3 D’s–depression, delirium, and dementia in depth. How do the 3 D’s overlap, how can we distinguish between the three, and treatment and management of each condition.
In addition, you will learn the many causes of dementia–it’s not just Alzheimer’s disease. Barb will also discuss the various types of stroke as well as neuroassessment pearls for patient assessment at the bedside. Parkinson’s disease will also be covered–signs, symptoms, and various treatment modalities. The blood-brain-barrier becomes more lipid-soluble with aging–hence, patients will experience more neurological side effects with drugs that are capable of crossing the blood-brain-barrier. Barb will discuss the use of anti-depressants in the geriatric patient, as well as the use of drugs for dementia and delirium/psychosis.
Seminar 3 – The “OLD TICKER”: The Geriatric Heart
The majority of patients with heart disease are elderly. Barb will discuss the causes of chronic heart failure as well as the clinical manifestations and treatment modalities. New drugs are on the horizon that are being considered “game changers” for the heart failure patient.
The newest information concerning lipids, diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease will also be discussed–each of which have implications in preventing chronic heart disease. Barb will teach your tricks with the stethoscope–listening to hearts is an acquired skill–but one that can be acquired easily if a few easy rules are followed.
You will learn the “ins and outs” of the numerous classes of drugs used to treat cardiac conditions–their indications, contraindications, side effects, adverse effects, and drug interactions.
