Info Sheet: Bill 46 Implementation

On December 9, 2020, the Alberta legislature enacted Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2020 (No. 2), commonly called “Bill 46”.

Bill 46 included a large number of amendments to the Health Professions Act (the “HPA”), but these amendments did not come into force at that time. Most of the amendments to the HPA under Bill 46 will come into force by April 1, 2023.

Although the amendments to the HPA (and related amendments to regulations, bylaws, and standards of practice) are numerous, at this time their impact on practice is small. Instead, Bill 46, initially, primarily focuses on harmonizing existing legislation and creating a foundation for health regulatory colleges to have greater flexibility in regulating health professionals in the future.
